Supernatural - "Jump the Shark"

This is one episode that left me feeling - unsatisfied? Conflicted? Angry?

So the Winchesters do indeed - or shall I say did have a younger brother; a brother who was brought up by a good mother; who had father that took him to baseball games, and took him fishing.

Normal parents. A normal life. Something which Dean Winchester has never known, and something that Sam Winchester has only had a small taste of: normalcy. Too bad the kid's been dead a while, and is in fact a ghoul intent on killing the Winchester brothers because their father killed his.

Strange, though, isn't it? Strange how a man who seemed so obsessed with seeking vengeance for the death of the love of his life could in fact being living a second 'normal' one.

Dean -

Oh, Dean. I can only imagine how you must've felt, standing there looking at this boy who had everything you've always wanted: A normal life, a mother, a father who was proud of you. And yet, despite all of that, you still wanted to protect the boy; protect him from the life of a hunter. Even when faced with something such as this, you put your anger aside, and thought of the boy.

Sam -

What's going on here, Sam? This boy has a fighting chance at something that you want for yourself and Dean, and yet you're so quick to condemn him to the same tragic life that both you and your older brother have been forced to bear? What has happened to you?

By the way, Sam, I honestly don't think that was meant to be a compliment, and quite frankly, I agree completely with your brother: you are exactly like your father, in both the good ways and the bad.

Papa Winchester -

A double-life. I must admit that I never would've thought that you would be capable of something such as this, Papa Winchester. Still, you never abandoned the boy. You made sure to let him know that he was loved - something all fathers should do, but unfortunately, many don't.

Maybe if you had showed the same consideration to your other two boys, things would've been different...

That's all I've got to say on this episode. I was left feeling extremely angry, and I actually felt like crying, so yeah... I'm just going to stop there before I actually do start crying.

Oh, boys... I love both of you so very, very much.

KITSU'S FINAL GRADE: C+

Amazing how many people in this world seem to have father issues. It's also sad...

Yes, they're are indeed hurt - including Sam. I've seen so many reviews so far that have put Sam down to the dogs, and yet... I felt sorry for him. Sure, what he did was wrong, but I couldn't really blame him for it.

It appeared - or at least it did to me - that Sam is starved for something. What that something is, I don't know. Maybe he wants his old hunter life back? Maybe he wants to have things between Dean and him back to the way they once were. It's hard to tell. All I know is that it's going to be a while before I'm able to watch this episode again.

Oh, I'm not mad at Sammy, either. He wanted a brother again. Someone he could bond with, someone who understood him. Adam had this potential because he wanted revenge for his mom and Sam is out for Lilith's head in revenge for Dean and everything else. They'd have drive and camaraderie. Adam also listens and respects Sam, while Dean doesn't. Dean always sees him as a "little" brother.

Plus, Dean no longer gets any of this. I mean, he "gets" it, but he doesn't agree with it. They've grown distant. He thinks Sam is going too far. Adam doesn't have all of Dean's demon bias yet. So yeah... Sammy sees the potential of having a brother again. I can't fault him that.

Yes, exactly. Sam quickly bonded with Adam because he saw something in him - something he had lost with Dean.

It's actually rather sad, if you think about it. Both boys seem to be yearning for something from each other, and yet their relationship is too damaged to find it. Instead Sam goes off with Ruby, while Dean completely breaks down emotionally in front of Castiel.

If it drives Dean to depend more and more on Cas... who am I to disagree?!?! XD

Word to this, bb. WORD TO THIS.

Thanks for the review!

I haven't seen the episode yet, and I was just wondering what happens in the scene when Dean breaks down in front of Cas. Even though Dean and Sam are drifting apart (which makes me more depressed than I could possibly begin to describe), I'm glad that he at least has someone to confide in ♥

We were referring to the hospital scene in the episode 'On the Head of a Pin'. That was the first time Dean ever broke down in front him.

The second time was in the episode 'The Monster at the End of this Book' when he begged Castiel to save Sam.

Oh, I thought there was another at the end of this ep. *blushes* Sorry ;)
Thanks again!

No problem. ^_^

Dean doesn't because Sam has lied to him again and again, right to his face as Dean is telling him he knows Sam is lying. That shows such blatant disregard. He's tossed Dean aside because essentially Dean won't agree with something bad that Sam is doing. It's Sam's way or the highway essentially. It's like with the angels, when they didn't turn out how Sam wanted them to, he basically just dismissed them(except if he thinks he can use them for what he wants in some way).

I disagree that Dean doesn't respect Sam. Dean did treat Sam with respect. Sam has always had equal input on their hunts and Dean has listened to his opinions and put them into use. I'd point to Dean's apology in Scarecrow, where Dean talked about what he admired about Sam, as a person, as an individual.

I hate to say it but it's not a good thing that Sam basically was hoping to turn Adam into a little lackey figuring "hey I can shape him into what I want him to be FOR ME". Dean really never treated Sam that way, he hoped, he tried to convince but he ultimately treated Sam as his own person.

Right. I'm not saying it was a "good" thing, not at all, I'm saying it's an understandable thing. Just because I can riddle out the motivation does not mean I agree with it. Middle children [stereotypically] are very rebellious and can often be manipulative of the youngest (in response to pressure from the overly conforming eldest).

And I didn't mean Dean doesn't respect Sam... I meant from Sam's perspective he would feel that Dean doesn't listen to him. It IS Sam's way or the highway and thus if Dean isn't willing to listen/compromise, I can see Sam as writing it off as if Dean doesn't respect him. I was giving Sam's motivation for acting as he did, not the actual assessment of the facts. My apologies for not wording it properly.

I'm a Dean!Girl all the way. But I don't hate Sammy. I see his motivation, and though I very rarely agree with it, I can understand it. I can't hate him or be pissed at him when, however messed up his stance may be, it still makes some semblance of sense... especially if you think about it from his perspective.
