Title: Dance with the Devil (aka "Dark Times Lie Ahead")
Fandom: Supernatural
Spoilers: Through episode 4x07; It's the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester
Characters: Sam, Dean, Castiel and Uriel
Pairing: Dean/Castiel
Tracks: 14 (runtime: 55.7 minutes)

Dedications: To my partner in crime and best friend, [livejournal.com profile] zed_pm . And to my beloved guardian angel, [livejournal.com profile] ace_of_spades6 . She's got quite a bit going on in her homelife, so send her your prayers.

Notes: This is it... My final mix of the year.

This one took me quite some time to compile. I also hadn't planned on including Uriel in the mix at first - just Sam, Dean and Castiel (my ultimate OT3). But after seeing him in the episode It's the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester, I just couldn't resist.

Unlike the vast majority of the fandom, I didn't see Uriel as being a 'dick'. Instead, I saw him as a strong, fearless, stern and proud warrior - someone whom you would definitely want on your side on the battlefield. And so what if he's got a taste for the theatrics? He was still able to instill fear in Sam. In other words, this Angel knows how to get the job done. Which is exactly what you need when you're fighting in the war to end all wars.

As for my song choices, I wanted to go for something that truly sounded apocalyptic. I also wanted the entire mix to be dark, with an underlying theme of hope for the future. That's why the final track is Robert Kral's Home. It's a short but bittersweet instrumental piece that's poignant in the regard that it suggests maybe - just maybe - our boys will make it through this in one piece. However, I don't foresee it. I've got the strongest feeling that this series is going to leave every single one of us broken.

Special Note: This is the only fanmix I have ever compiled that my mother literally said "wow" when she listened to it. That right there, ladies and gentlemen, should tell you something because she's one of my toughest critics.

Prelude: Something Dark Is Coming - Bear McCreary (Instrumental)

A dark, haunting piece that warns of what's coming.

This is one of only two songs included in this mix that actually causes me to tear up whenever I listen to it. It makes you wonder about what is in store for our boys. Where is the road of life going to take them, and will they be able to survive it?

Start the Apocalypse - Robert Kral (Instrumental)

The epic battle of good versus evil begins. Who will prevail when the warriors of light face off against the forces of darkness? What casualties will we be forced to bear?

Character Song (Uriel): The Man Comes Around - Johnny Cash

There's a man going around taking names
And he decides who to free and who to blame
Everybody won't be treated all the same
There will be a golden ladder reaching down
When the man comes around

Skies on Fire - AC/DC

I know you, now you know me,
tell me what it is you want it to be,
In the rain, in the streets,
you’re amazed by all the things that you see,
Tell me what I see, how’s it got to be

Dance with the Devil - Breaking Benjamin

Close your eyes
So many days go by
Easy to find what's wrong
Harder to find what's right

I believe in you, I can show you
That I can see right through all your empty lies
I won't stay long in this world so wrong

Character Song (Dean Winchester): Dead Souls - Nine Inch Nails

Someone take these dreams away
That point me to another day
A duel of personalities
That stretch all true reality

The figures from the past stand tall
And mocking voices ring the hall
Imperialistic house of prayer
Conquistadors who took their share

Evil Angel - Breaking Benjamin

I'm a believer, nothing could be worse
All these imaginary friends
Hiding betrayal, driving the nail
Hoping to find a savior

Follow the Wolves - Demon Hunter

Every second is a pure affliction
But I can feel your pain
Choke back the burn of wrath as they violate your name
No sign of innocence in this godforsaken place
When the truth is in your hands, they'll spit upon your face

Character Song (Castiel): Personal Jesus - Marilyn Manson

Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who cares
Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who's there

Dirty Hands - Bear McCreary (Instrumental)

I love the rustic, western sound to this piece; it's the perfect lead-in for the following:

Character Song (Sam Winchester): Hurt - Johnny Cash

I wear this crown of thorns
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I am still right here

This is the other song which causes the tears to fall whenever I listen to it because I always think of it as being sung from Sam's point of view to Dean. It really does rip your heart out when you listen to the lyrics, and then think of what Sam's currently going through. He's having to deal with, not only demon blood running through his veins, but also being under the watchful eye of God's warriors. One false move, and he's done for.

Under the Wing - Bear McCreary (Instrumental)

A soft, short piece which serves to be the lead-in for the following:

Pairing Song (Dean/Castiel): Carry Me Down - Demon Hunter

And if you see me losing ground
Don't be afraid to lie
I know the pain inside my heart
Can't break the fear inside of yours

Will you carry me down
The aisle that final day?
With your tears and cold hands
Shaking from the weight

This is my favorite song for this pairing - whether it be slashed or not. The lyrics fit them perfectly. I also love the fact that It could be taken from either point of view.

Epilogue: Home - Robert Kral (Instrumental)

And thus the mix closes on a very somber, yet melodramatic note. The title isn't meant to insinuate Kansas. Instead, it's meant to insinuate a calm, bittersweet ending to the boys' journey. Whether it be on the open road, in Kansas, or in Heaven... That's for Kripke to decide. And I'll graciously accept whatever he so chooses - even if I do spend the following months crying my eyes out while cursing his name.
