I spent my evening yesterday watching my favorite episodes of Supernatural season two. It got me to thinking afterwards, and I was struck with a few ideas of what I think Kripke may be planning to do next season.
There are a few spoilers, so I'm placing these ideas of mine under the cut.
Now -- time for my theory for season four.
We pretty much already know that Dean is indeed going to return after being in hell for four months. Well... four months in our time. The actual amount of time he spent in hell is unknown; he could've been down there for years for all we know. We do know, however, that he's not going to remember anything that happened to him while he was down there. He's just going to wake up in the middle of nowhere (preferably naked). Now, the question is why. Why has he been sent back? What happened to him while he was in the pits of hell?
My answer: I theorize that Dean has been sent back as a sleeper agent. Think about it -- we all know that Lilith sees Sam as a potential threat, so what better way to take him out than with his own brother. Dean would be the perfect weapon for her against Sam because Dean is his one and only weakness. There's no way whatsoever that Sam would be able to kill him, but if Dean has been brainwashed, then he would be able to kill Sam easily. That's what sleeper agents are -- they're soldiers who've been programmed to carry-out a specific job. On the surface, they're the same people they've always been -- but once that trigger has been activated, they completely forget everything about the person they once were and set out to complete their mission.
Will Dean succeed? No, of course not. Through the course of trying to kill Sam, something is probably going to awaken in Dean -- such as a childhood memory -- and it's going to stop him. That's my theory at least...
Evidence to support this: not much as of yet. I'm just going on the few spoilers that Kripke has let slip -- mainly about what happened to Dean being slowly revealed through the course of the season, and that the brother's relationship is going to be "massively" affected by it.
Another prediction: I'm not sure why, but I've got the strongest feeling that this season is going to be the one where we see the death of Bobby. I'd hate to see him go because I adore Bobby -- but he has become a fan favorite; his death would indeed hit us hard.
After the death of Papa Winchester, Bobby became a sort of father figure for the boys -- the one person they could count on whenever they needed help. If he's killed, then the brothers are going to have to fend for themselves. This, in turn, would allow for some superb character development for the Winchesters.
Also, Supernatural is supposed to only run for five seasons, so what better time time kill off Bobby than now?
It's either going to be that or Dean's going to become a warrior for the side of light -- with Sam on the side of darkness.
Hmmm... That actually makes more sense than my other theory listed above.
Talk about tragic... I can't think of a more fitting climax to this series than to see these two brothers on opposing sides of the war fighting one another. Also, my mother and I have already started formulating our theories as to what the final scene of the series will be: She believes that the final scene will contain the two brothers being re-united with their parents in the afterlife thus concluding the Winchester saga, and to a certain degree, I agree with her -- the only thing that I disagree with is the fact that I believe it'll just be Dean joining his parents.

Also, not fan of Bobby dying. Not to say that it wouldn't make for a potentially good story, but I'd just hate to lose him. I adore the character so much.

And yeah, Sam and Bobby would more than likely burn Dean's body for the sake of their own protection and his. That was one of things I was trying to work out as well, and it ultimately helped me to come up with the "Sleeper" theory.
Also, my sentiments exactly on Bobby dying. But Kripke has proven that he enjoys tormenting us...
